Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a exciting storyline featuring celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces increasing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Spoilers for the latest installment of the new season lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

The third episode ended with a major cliffhanger and revealed the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the main group to undertake their own adventure, apart from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table features Teor (played by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, weaving together the personal journeys before dividing into three separate parties: Fighters, Schemers, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

According to the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for participants who enjoy a classically intense fight-heavy gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might appear mismatched, but the actions of the latest installment demonstrate why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the group understands precisely where to head next after a violent opening clash with the enemy group.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—exploited the enemy for his own means, entering the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and taking all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then paid off his obligations and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and best friend, desires vengeance.
  • The adventurer is familiar with Timmony and cautions that it is a hostile environment.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • But, their status as key figures in the powerful family could enable the group enter areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter pledged a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and Wicander betrayed the powerful family and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the family.

This means them few options but to journey toward the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s follow-up content, we learn that the combat party will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight cast members to assemble the Explorers and Strategists groups.

Fans can look forward to finding out which characters will be in which group in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
